From the moment she stepped onto the political scene in support of her husband, people have been fascinated with Michelle Obama’s style. She is one of those rare first ladies that is both a chic dresser the fashion world adores and someone the average woman can identify with as wife/mother/generally awesome lady, so I can see the reason for the continued obsession. She has a great eye for what looks good on her and is the queen of the “outfit remix” – mixing older pieces with new ones to create a new outfit. Though she has upgraded from J. Crew to J. Mendel since she became FLOTUS, there are some key elements of Michelle’s style that a lady with any budget can afford.
1. Structured sheaths. A staple in many working women’s wardrobes for its versatility is a high quality, fitted sheath dress. Throw a blazer on during the day and accessorize with scarf or statement necklace for meetings and presentations. Take off the blazer, add in fancy earrings, clutch and stilettos for a dinner out with your fella or meeting up with the girls. In the past, Michelle wore simply structured sheaths reminiscent of Jackie O, but lately she has been experimenting with different colours, necklines and embellishments. If you choose a more modern sheath, take a cue from Michelle and keep other elements of your outfit neutral and simple so it stands out on its own.
2. Chic Coats. Many fashion bloggers (including me) would agree investing in a great coat is one way to look chic almost all the time. Add in a fantastic purse, and you have the key elements for looking good almost everywhere you go. Michelle owns a variety of coats for use in different occasions, from meetings with heads of state to taking her kids to the movies. Every lady should have at least one trench coat for fall/spring, one wool winter coat and one leather jacket for weekends and evenings out in her wardrobe. If you are lucky and can invest in more that just the basic coats, adding a patterned topper, coloured mid length coat, or one to match an aforementioned structured sheath are all good choices.
3. Feminine Florals. Adding floral prints into your wardrobe can make getting dressed in the morning so much more fun, but finding the right one takes careful consideration. Too large of a flower pattern can overwhelm a small frame, while a smaller pattern on a curvy lady like me may emphasize areas one would rather not draw attention to. Unfortunately, there is no secret formula to finding a floral pattern that will flatter your body shape (it’s literally trial and error) but consider a classic A-line cut dress like Michelle Obama has on many occasions for the best chance of success in your search.
4. Lady in Red. While black is always appropriate for a fancy evening event, we can all agree it can be a tad boring. So when you need to glam out, why not choose red like Michelle Obama? Red is a colour that turns heads and commands attention, this we know, but it is also powerful because it is classic and feminine. A basic black dress has as sense of utility, but when you wear a red dress, you tell the world you have arrived and you are not afraid to be noticed. So whether you show up on the arm of the President or not, try red for the next big event on your calendar.
